I have reluctantly decided that CSS PLaY will no longer be serving its pages as XHTML1.1 with MIME type application/XHTML+xml.
There are three main reasons for this, namely:

1. 99.9% of my visitors are not using this standard.
2. It was causing problems with some of the demonstrations.
3. It was incorrectly serving application/XHTML+xml to Internet Explorer which we all know will only accept text/html.

Instead I will be converting all the demonstration pages to XHTML 1.0 Strict which will be served as text/html to all browsers. Please excuse the incorrect doctype on the pages whilst I convert the site.

Because CSS PLaY deals with experimental CSS that is exactly what you get JUST CSS, no javascript or any other programming language has been used in any of the demonstrations.

These demonstrations may work in your browser and if you are using the latest versions of IE, Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, Opera and Safari then no doubt they will, but any other browsers, especially the older ones, will probably fail to display correctly.

This is not the fault of the XHTML or the CSS, it is just the browser that cannot cope with the styling. If this is the case with your browser and you want to see what is going on then I would suggest that you upgrade to the latest version or just get Firefox on a PC or Safari on a Mac.

Because this home page has Amazon.com ads which are placed in iframes I have had to use XHTML1 1.0 Transitional as iframes will not validate if used in XHTML 1.0 Strict or XHTML 1.1.

I am 59 years old, married with two children, work as an electronics design draughtsman and have a passion for computers and photography.

I started out with computers in the 1980s when I began writing articles on the ZX81 and ZX Spectrum for the computer magazines of the time. I was also commissioned by McGraw-Hill to write two books on Z80 programming for the ZX Spectrum.

The web was the next big attraction and once more I have become hooked, as you can no doubt tell, with CSS. This site has been around for just over a year now and, although not as well known as 'the big boys' it is not doing too badly.

The alternative styles and my javascript switcher have been dropped from this new layout, primarily because any changes I wanted to make to this home page required updating the CSS for every style.
